University
Lake will normally be open for recreation from March through
mid-November as follows:
Friday through Monday, 6:30 AM - 6 PM

Located
two miles west of Chapel Hill next to Jones Ferry Road in
Carrboro.

Recreation
at the lake includes boat and electric motor rentals and fishing,
plus a free picnic/sunbathing area. The lake is open between
late March and early November. Contact the lake warden's office

Built
by UNC-Chapel Hill in 1932; operated by the Orange Water &
Sewer Authority.

Dam
measures 811 feet long.

213-acre
lake holds a usable capacity of 450 million gallons.

With
the 1989 addition of Cane Creek Reservoir, the two lakes can
provide up to 13 million gallons per day to OWASA's Jones
Ferry Road Water Treatment Plant.

Several
upgrades over the years -- the latest include a series of
dam and recreation area improvements finished in 1993.

Zoning
regulations and limited development within University Lake's
30 square-mile watershed protects the lake's high water quality.
