University Lake will normally be open for recreation from March through
mid-November as follows:
Friday through Monday, 6:30 AM - 6 PM

  • Located two miles west of Chapel Hill next to Jones Ferry Road in Carrboro.
  • Recreation at the lake includes boat and electric motor rentals and fishing, plus a free picnic/sunbathing area. The lake is open between late March and early November. Contact the lake warden's office for more information. Lake tours available by calling (919) 968-4421, ext. 267.
  • Built by UNC-Chapel Hill in 1932; operated by the Orange Water & Sewer Authority.
  • Dam measures 811 feet long.
  • 213-acre lake holds a usable capacity of 450 million gallons.
  • With the 1989 addition of Cane Creek Reservoir, the two lakes can provide up to 13 million gallons per day to OWASA's Jones Ferry Road Water Treatment Plant.
  • Several upgrades over the years -- the latest include a series of dam and recreation area improvements finished in 1993.
  • Zoning regulations and limited development within University Lake's 30 square-mile watershed protects the lake's high water quality.
