Travel at the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard with Hillsborough Street will be limited from October 18th to the 20th, 9 PM - 5 AM; and on October 21st, 9 AM - 4 PM.

Due to nighttime water line work by OWASA, travel on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard will be limited to two lanes at the Hillsborough Street intersection from Wednesday, October 18th to Friday, October 20th between 9 PM and 5 AM each night, and during the day on Saturday, October 21st from 9 AM to 4 PM. Two-way northbound and southbound traffic on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard will be maintained through the intersection.

During these times:

  • Turns will not be allowed onto Hillsborough Street from either Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard or Umstead Drive.
  • Turns will not be allowed from Hillsborough Street to either Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard or Umstead Drive.
  • Drivers northbound on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard will not be able to turn left onto Umstead Drive.
  • A marked detour along Bolinwood Drive will allow access to Hillsborough Street.

The map below shows the locations of the work area, lane closings and detour.

After the intersection work from October 18th to the 20th, OWASA’s contractor will install permanent pavement on the 21st.

“We ask for your patience and understanding during these temporary changes in travel and access,” said Simon Lobdell, OWASA’s Project Manager. “The work at the intersection is part of our water pipe replacement in Hillsborough Street from Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard to a point near North Street. This work is needed to help maintain reliable water service, including water for fire protection when needed.”
