JOINT NEWS RELEASE BY THE TOWN OF CHAPEL HILL AND OWASA
September 30, 2011
The part of Umstead Drive between Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Umstead Park has reopened to traffic earlier than expected because OWASA’s contractor for the Bolin Creek sewer replacement project is ahead of schedule.
The part of Umstead Drive between Estes Drive Extension and Village Drive may reopen in one to two months, but weather and other factors can affect the contractor as in any project.
“We are very happy with the progress of our contractor to date, and we deeply appreciate the patience and understanding of the many residents who have been affected by our sewer project,” said Jeremy Fireline, P.E., OWASA’s Project Manager. He added that “This project is part of OWASA’s work to prevent wastewater overflows from the public sanitary sewer system. The sewer we are replacing was approaching the end of its useful life and is being replaced with a larger diameter pipe.”
The Chapel Hill Parks and Recreation Department will inform the community when the reopening of Umstead Park may occur. Chapel Hill Transit routes A and Saturday T will be taken off their detours on Saturday, Oct. 8. New schedules will be available at www.chtransit.org on Wednesday, Oct. 5. The N and Saturday JN will continue on current detour routes and schedules.
