On Thursday, October 31st, the American Red Cross and OWASA will sponsor the annual Halloween blood drive at OWASA from 11 AM to 3:30 PM.
The blood drive will be in the Community Room on the lower floor of OWASA’s Administration Building, 400 Jones Ferry Road, Carrboro. For a map showing OWASA’s location, please click here.
People who come out to donate will be entered in a drawing to win a $200 gift card courtesy of Suburban Propane.
“The need for blood is constant, and there truly is no better feeling than helping to save the life of a patient in need,” said Kirsten Kruhm, American Red Cross Donor Recruitment Representative for the Carolinas Blood Services Region. “Each day the Red Cross must collect about 38,000 units of blood to meet the needs of patients.”
Every two seconds, someone in the United States needs blood. Accident victims as well as patients with cancer, sickle cell disease, blood disorders and other illnesses receive lifesaving transfusions every day. There is no substitute for blood, and volunteer donors are the only source.
While all blood types are needed, the Red Cross urges eligible donors with blood type O to roll up their sleeves. Type O negative blood is the universal blood type and can be transfused to anyone who needs blood, regardless of their own blood type. Type O negative blood may be used in emergencies, when there may not be time to cross-match a person’s blood type.
Donors must be in general good health, have photo identification, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be at least 17 years old or 16 years old with parental consent. Donors who are 18 and younger must also meet height and weight requirements.
For more information or to schedule an appointment, please visit www.redcrossblood.org and enter “owasa” as the sponsor code.
Making an appointment will help the donation process go smoothly for everyone. Walk-ins are welcome after noon. Information is also available from the American Red Cross at 1-800-RED CROSS.
