OWASA Releases 2023 Wastewater Report Card

OWASA’s 2023 Wastewater Report Card is now available in English and Spanish. This annual report card is our update to the community about our wastewater treatment and operational processes. This year, as in previous years, OWASA met or surpassed all state and federal regulations for wastewater treatment.

The team at the Mason Farm Wastewater Treatment Plant is responsible for a system that treats about 7 million gallons of wastewater per day and 3.5 billion gallons per year. Our community sewer system is comprised of about 350 miles of underground pipes that carry wastewater from homes, schools, and businesses to the treatment plant.

Our wastewater treatment process combines biology and technology and is managed by our skilled wastewater treatment plant team. After the wastewater is treated to meet all regulatory standards, it is returned to Morgan Creek, where it eventually flows to Jordan Lake. OWASA also produces a nutrient-rich material called biosolids as part of our wastewater treatment process that we provide to farmers for agricultural purposes. Additionally, OWASA continues its partnership with UNC-Chapel Hill to maintain our reclaimed water system.

Maintaining our community’s wastewater infrastructure is a top priority for OWASA. Roughly half of every dollar OWASA receives through rates and fees is reinvested into the wastewater system. These investments help maintain the system’s reliability and resiliency, while also improving the efficiency of our operations.

You can help keep our community’s wastewater system functioning well by disposing of items properly. Only flush the Three Ps – pee, poo, and toilet paper – down the drain. Feminine products, disposable diapers, dental floss, and “flushable” wipes should be disposed of in a waste bin. Oils and grease should be allowed to cool before being disposed of.
