West Cameron Avenue Water Line Replacement
OWASA has identified the water lines in West Cameron Avenue for replacement to improve the reliability of our water distribution system. A small segment of the project, in the intersection of West Cameron Avenue and South Columbia Street, was completed in August 2020.
Construction on the next phase of this water line replacement project is expected to begin in the Summer of 2021.
Why: The current pipes serving the area are aging and in poor condition. The two water lines being replaced are each nearly 100 years old. This project will improve reliability for continued water service for the area.
When: Construction would be expected to get underway in summer 2021. Work taking place near the railroad area at the intersection of Merritt Mill Road is expected to occur in the summer of 2021. The bid was delayed from the initially proposed timeline as OWASA considered the budgetary impacts of COVID-19.
Impacts: The project will involve noise, dust, and mud.
Traffic impacts: For the majority of the project, traffic will be maintained in each direction while work is being carried out in the parking or bike lanes on the north end of the roadway. There is potential for road closures or detours on specific days with advanced notice.
Parking Impacts: As the work proceeds along the road, up to 500 feet of the road and parking spaces will be affected at a time.
Laydown Area: The contractor will have a rolling work area and will likely use this area for the majority of their work. They will also use vacant lots nearby to store and park equipment, known as a “laydown area.” We will ensure that work areas, including these laydown areas, are restored to their preconstruction conditions.
Work Time: Normal work hours for the project will be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday with the possibility for occasional Saturday work. Any lane closures needed for the project will be restricted to 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Water Service: Water service will be normal throughout the vast majority of the work. There will be brief water service interruptions as customers are tied into the new water line, and the affected customers will receive advance notice of any planned outages.
