Summer is the perfect time to spend a day at the lake – for a picnic, sunbathing, gentle boating, and fishing! On this July 4th national holiday, and on weekends throughout the summer, OWASA invites community members to enjoy a relaxing day at University Lake in Carrboro, or Cane Creek Reservoir in Chapel Hill.
There are free picnicking and sunbathing areas at both sites. Cane Creek Reservoir also has a quarter mile nature trail. Kayakers and people who enjoy fishing love coming to both these locations. For a modest recreation fee, visitors can rent a flat bottom boat, canoe or kayak, or bring their own small private boat. Many visitors simply enjoy relaxing or reading in the shade on a hot summer day!
University Lake and Cane Creek Reservoir are open July 4th from 6:30 am to 6:00 pm. Normal days of operation and opening hours throughout the summer are:
- University Lake, Fridays through Sundays, 6:30 am - 6:00 pm
- Cane Creek Reservoir, Saturdays and Sundays, 6:30 am - 6:00 pm

Through every season, OWASA works to keep these bodies of water in top condition. Not only are they recreational sites, they are also the primary raw water sources for the Carrboro-Chapel Hill community! Every day, the OWASA team sources and treats about 7 million gallons of water to serve the needs of the Carrboro-Chapel Hill community – pumping it through 400 miles of pipes from the lakes to OWASA’s treatment plant, to local homes, schools, and businesses.
OWASA’s administrative offices at 400 Jones Ferry Road in Carrboro will be closed on July 4th. Personnel will remain on call 24/7 to respond to service interruptions or emergencies. Customers are welcome to call OWASA's after hours line anytime at 919-968-4421.
