Welcome to OWASA: Chris Giesting, Water Supply and Treatment Manager

So many roads were traveled to bring Chris Giesting to his current role as the Water Supply and Treatment Manager for OWASA. Giesting took over that role in June 2021, moving across the country from his most-recent stop as the General Manager of Eastsound Sewer and Water district, a small utility provider in Washington State.

Giesting grew up in Cincinnati and has made stops across the Midwest, to Colorado, California, and Kansas – there were some repeat stops in states along the way as well. But it was time to find a more permanent home for work and his family, and that was what made for great timing as the search began for this role at OWASA.

“Some of the things that swayed me to come here was the fact there were a lot of [15- and 20-year employees] around. That says a lot.” He added that institutional knowledge has helped a lot in learning a new utility system.

This isn’t Giesting’s first venture into the Tar Heel State. Two of his passions outside of work are camping and concerts, so those have led to many trips to Asheville, Charlotte, and Raleigh over the years, as well as a few walks in the woods.

During an internship in the Coweeta Experimental Forest in western North Carolina, Giesting recalled thinking “I’m going to be [in North Carolina]; I’m going to be down here one of these days.”

His professional background has spanned working in forestry, lab research, and as an operator at both Water Treatment and Wastewater Treatment Plants.

Outside of work, he is working on learning guitar and mandolin, and he loves a good cup of coffee – some more things we have in abundance in our community.
